On this Veteran’s Day, I think of heroes…
I think of my nephew, a navy pilot, who has been in harms way during deployment and does a dangerous task on the best of days. Also, his wife and daughters who support him in his work and live their lives on the edge for him…and for us.
And, I think of my Dad who epitomizes a hero.
At 19, he was piloting a B-17 bomber, flying 35 missions over dangerous territory. Volunteering for, and then doing, his duty.
Returning to raise a family, work hard at jobs liked and disliked but doing his best at whatever task was at hand. Loving his wife. Living each day with honor, dignity and humor.
Even those days in later life when he was paralyzed with MS and living only with his thoughts and the activities that could take place from the neck up. Continuing to live with honor, dignity and humor.
And, again, my other hero is my Mom…the one supporting, waiting for her husband to come home, picking up the pieces of their lives…moving on. With him in his illness every day…supporting and loving through good times and bad, in sickness and in health.
