Savor the Tomatoes While Ye May

We have a large garden.  We have had this large garden for a number of years and I have spent many hours canning products during the summer months.  Time being the industrious ant preparing for the cold winter months while the grasshopper fiddles.

Now, I am not a total grasshopper yet, but this ant is easing back.  I am enjoying the summer’s bounty as it arrives.  Especially the tomatoes.

We are enjoying delicious, tart, flavorful tomatoes every day now.  The juicy slices appear on our plates at dinner every day.  A bit of pepper is their only garnish.  I am constantly reminded how store bought tomatoes should not be considered to be the same vegetable as homegrown heirloom tomatoes.  There is nothing similar in taste or texture.

I will probably be canning ketchup, salsa and spaghetti sauce during the height of the season so that no delicious tomato is wasted.  But for now, we will savor each bite of life.
