It is springlike in Texas and thoughts turn to love. Of course, in the pasture there are periodic thoughts of love anyway…
This week the Sheep Shearer arrived. He lives in Kansas but travels throughout the region shearing sheep. It was the sheep of Acme Ranch this time!
The night before the shearing, P and W moved their small herd into a pen to make them more easily handled.
Dos, the ram, was penned separately since he might damage the lighter pen where the herd was located.
Connie and her lambs were also penned separately to protect the lambs.
When the shearer arrived, he set up his equipment, then one by one the ewes were herded to him and his work began.
Then the naked lady was returned to the pen.
It was amazing how quickly and skillfully the shearer handled the sheep! He said he could shear 16 per hour.
The sheared sheep looked so different! Lexi looked like a goat.
Then it was time for the ram to be sheared. Those horns look intimidating to me but the shearer flipped him around without problem.
After each sheep was sheared, the fleece was carried to the barn.
The harvest. Each fleece was different in quality.
The lambs recognized their naked mom easily.
And while some rams are embarrassed and emasculated after shearing, Dos was thrilled by the sight of his naked ladies and went to work right away!
